The director of a beach club murdered in Playa del Carmen

A beach club manager was fatally shot in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo on Tuesday, just hours after the US government issued a security alert for the state.

Federico Mazzoni’s body was discovered around 6 p.m. inside Mamita’s Beach Club, of which he was the manager, in an area surrounded by luxury hotels.

Two men entered the facility and spoke with Mazzoni before killing him in a bathroom and fleeing on a personal watercraft, according to the news site. Infobae reported.

Quintana Roo Attorney General Óscar Montes de Oca said there was no sign the murder was due to extortion and was unlikely to be linked to the killing of two Canadians who had criminal history on Friday at the Xcaret Hotel, 11 kilometers away.

Colleagues and friends praised Mazzoni for his dedication to his work.

The owners of Mamita’s Beach Club said they did not want to jump to conclusions about what happened. “We are awaiting the outcome of the investigations and are working with the corresponding authorities for a full clarification,” they said in a statement.

The beach club bills itself as an upscale venue with a restaurant, family area, pool, VIP area, resident DJ, and spa and fitness center.

The travel alert from the US Consulate General in Mérida, issued hours before the murder, highlighted tourist hotspots for criminal activity. “In light of recent security incidents and criminal activity in popular tourist destinations such as Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum, U.S. citizens are reminded to exercise extra caution when traveling to the State of Quintana Roo. Criminal activity and violence may occur throughout the state, including in areas frequented by U.S. citizen visitors,” it read.

However, Governor Carlos Joaquín said crime in the state has gone down.

The incident was the fifth seaside shooting in Quintana Roo since last October. The escalation in violence prompted the deployment in December of a new National Guard tourist security battalion.
