Closing the month-long “Dance is in the Air” festival on Liberty Station’s new outdoor stage, this annual performance celebrates new works by four emerging choreographers: Luci Salinas, Kevin Truitt, Odessa Uno and Stephanie Vasquez. These four were originally selected in the 2020 competition, which was slated for March 14, 2020. We all know how that weekend rocked. The judges will choose a winning choreographer and dancer, and the audience will also be able to vote for their favorite.

The first part of the show brings together guest artists from other canceled shows throughout the pandemic, including Mayra Barragan, who won the competition in 2019. What I’ve seen of Barragan’s work is powerful, disruptive, and surprising.

Details: June 11-13, 2021. Friday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m., Sunday at 2:30 p.m. 2850 Roosevelt Road, Liberty Station. $ 25-30.

From the organizers:
The San Diego Dance Theater is excited to bring back the Young Choreographers Showcase & Prize. This audience favorite has been an annual event for 10 years and features emerging young choreographic artists. This year will feature choreographers initially selected for the 2021 Young Choreographer Showcase and Award who have been canceled due to COVID-19: Luci Salinas, Kevin Truitt, Odessa Uno and Stephanie Vasquez. These finalists will present their work to a panel of qualified and diverse judges who will determine the “Best Overall” and “Best Dancer” awards, while the audience will have the opportunity to vote each evening and choose the “Audience Favorite”.

To complete the program and in a spirit of collaboration and support, the San Diego Dance Theater has chosen to include guests: a soloist from the Teen Dance Fierce Maya Allum program created by Mario Jaimes of the San Diego Dance Theater, Mitchum Todd, Mayra Barragan and H2O Dance Company, directed by Rebekah Brown.

Sure to be a delightful performance, the Young Choreographers + Guests Closes the Dance is in the Air Festival, a collaboration with Malashock Dance and the San Diego Ballet, on an open-air stage at Liberty Station.
