If you’re discouraged in your battle against sin, remember this: The conflict is normal. The battles are winnable. And the war will end.

It is useless to think of growing in religious affections if we allow these sins to block the path toward spiritual growth.

How can you tell whether joy in God reigns in your soul, or joy in his gifts? One way is to ask whether your joy coexists with spiritual mourning.
